A George Washington University “Battleground Poll” out Thursday shows a solidifying lead for Barack Obama in a race that had looked like it would be close until the end but now has broken open amid economic calamity.

The George Washington announcement is the latest in a series of polls that portray a steep climb for Sen. John McCain.

Respondents were asked: “If the election for president were held today, and you had to make a choice, for which candidate would you probably vote?”

The answers were Obama, 47 percent, and McCain, 40 percent. That’s within the margin of error of the poll’s finding the week before.

Asked who is more likely to improve the economy, 52 percent said Obama and 33 percent said McCain.

The poll was conducted by Lake Research Partners, a Democratic firm, and The Tarrance Group, a Republican firm.

The poll of 1,000 registered likely voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
